The Great Basin Desert lies below elevations of 1500 meters. This is the hottest region in the C. Hart Merriam Elevation Gradient, with summer temperatures well exceeding 40° C (140° F). Plants and animals in this arid area have adapted to the lack of precipitation and severe extremes of temperature. Desert shrubs and cacti abound in this dry region. The desert life zone has integrated adaptations from the northern, colder and southern, warmer deserts to produce species that can live in extremes of cold and heat.
