Internship Projects
Internship projects focusing on science communication and outreach
to the broader community.
The goal of the IGERT internship is to provide students with experience
communicating science to diverse audiences. Internships will be
designed by the students based on their own interests, but several
potential opportunities have already been identified. For example,
internships are available at the three interpretive centers of
the Flagstaff Area National Monuments, the Institute for Tribal
Environmental Professionals (ITEP), several Navajo Reservation
High Schools, and at Yavapai College, a regional community college.
An added benefit of these experiences will be tangible and visible
outreach to under-represented minority populations, as the high
schools and community colleges involved have substantial Native
American and Hispanic enrollment. To augment the impact of the
IGERT internships, Mr. Mansel Nelson of the Institute for Tribal
Environmental Professionals-Environmental Education Outreach Program
(ITEPEEOP) will deliver targeted presentations to IGERT students
participating in IGERT seminar courses on effective teaching and
engagement techniques for Native American students.
All internships will involve the IGERT faculty mentor, who will
have responsibility for assigning the student’s internship
grade, and the Assistant Director who will review reports and
serve as “gatekeeper” for approving the
final internship grade; the administrative mechanism for this
will be for internship students to sign up for three units of
Independent Study.
