Merriam-Powell Mission Statement
The Merriam-Powell Center for Environmental Research
promotes interdisciplinary research, education and outreach throughout
the region. We foster collaborations among scientists, land-managers,
and educators to 1) understand environmental processes essential for
functioning ecosystems, 2) apply scientific knowledge for the development
of effective strategies that will ensure intact ecosystems for future
generations.
Website Highlight
Colorado Plateau Stable Isotope Laboratory
Based at Northern Arizona University, the laboratory is designed to
serve students, postdoctoral researchers, and faculty at NAU who require carbon,
nitrogen, sulfur, oxygen, and hydrogen stable-isotope analyses for their research.
Scientists from other institutions are welcome to send us samples for analysis.
CPSIL's website includes an overview of the various services provided by the
lab and information on how to submit samples for analysis.

Recycling
at Northern Arizona University
has been ongoing since early 1991, when campus warehouse space (Building
84) was dedicated to the program. Recycling began modestly, with just over
100 tons in the first year. By 1996, this had increased to almost 1200
tons per year, with an average annual tonnage of 1124 between 1994 and
2004. A composting component was added in 2000, and food waste from on-campus
dining halls was collected and composted. In the summer of 2005, NAU closed
the on-campus facility and entered into a contract with the City of Flagstaff
for recycling and trash collection. The new program, and new policy, was
announced in June, 2005.
