Don't Duck Metadata
The Merriam-Powell Center for Environmental Research (MPCER) will again be providing Metadata Training for GIS users, managers and researchers in 2006-2007. This effort is funded by the NSDI CAP programt. Metadata training is based on the federal geographic data committee (FGDC) standardized metadata profile, Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM) and the National Biological Inventory Infrastructure (NBII) extension of the biological data profile (BDP).
Increasing use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and integrated research projects has produced a demand for standardized documentation on existing and new geospatial datasets. Creating metadata or “data about data” facilitates data sharing and dissemination among federal, tribal, state agencies and researchers.
The term Metadata is defined as " data about data". They describe the content, quality, condition, and other characteristics about data written in a standard FGDC format. Metadata help a person to locate and understand data.
1) Organize and maintain an organization's investment in data.
2) Provide information to data catalogs and clearing houses.
3) Provide information to aid in data transfer.
Who uses metadata? Any person who uses data. Data use in any field requires tracking and manipulation of information. Metadata provides the capability to know and understand a data's history, data parameters and appropriate data uses.
