NERD Getting Started

A brief primer

Information on research projects is stored in a geodatabase, which connects ArcGIS spatial data to a database that can be viewed through Microsoft Access. The geodatabase allows one to view all of the project information and view its location using ArcMap and ArcCatalog. Additional layers can be added in ArcMap to view the project in a variety of contexts . Opening the geodatabase in Microsoft Access allows for easy access to tabular data associated with projects. Most of this user guide discusses how to use the geodatabase through ESRI’s ArcGIS programs ArcMap and ArcCatalog. The last section covers viewing NERD through Access.

Using NERD

Opening NERD: To begin using NERD, insert the NERD CD, click “Start” on the desktop, and then click on “My Computer”. Double click on the CD drive icon, and the folder titled “NERD_final” should appear. Double click on the folder to see the ArcMap project file () and MS Access file () along with other supporting folders and files including NERD_OVERVIEW and NERD_METADATA (see Figure below ).
