I previewed A River Reborn this past weekend and showed it in my classes this week in conjunction with our recent discussion of hydroelectric power and other fossil fuel alternatives. I think the students really benefitted from hearing and seeing how the ecosystem was negatively affected by the dam. Our textbook really just mentioned that habitat can be destroyed and that flooding can occur, so it was nice to learn the specifics about an area...
I tried to emphasize the role that the scientists played in the decision-making process. We also talked a little about how sometimes one scientist's conclusions can conflict with another's, and how perspectives can change in light of new information.
It was also easy to make connections to other topics that we have covered recently, like energy flow through food webs and the importance of protecting native species.
