Big Sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) expansion and increasing density have been historical concerns for various stakeholders in the western United States since the 1940’s, especially within BLM lands on the Colorado Plateau. Sagebrush expansion is implicated in the lossof open grasslands and savannas, as well the reduction of biodiversity and the detrimental impact on land-use. In response to this concern the Bureau of Land Management has undertaken major efforts in eliminating sagebrush encroachment. Since the mid 1940s, the BLM has actively removed sagebrush from the landscape. In order to understand the effectiveness of the BLM’s past efforts and provide meaningful guidance for future removals, the Merriam-Powell Center for Environmental Research has created an Oracle database that stores various data, maps, and images about sagebrush treatments and offers a public, web-based interface from which this data may be downloaded.http://www5.nau.edu/pjit/index.aspx. Pinyon-juniper treatments are included in the database as well.
