Minutes from November 17, 2009...
At the last couple of meetings, we’ve talked about what we want our chapter to be. At the last meeting, we decided on some goals for our chapter:
- More student involvement
- An ongoing chapter project
- Help people find jobs and internships and other opportunities
- Support existing undergraduate researchers and inspire new ones.
At this meeting, we focused on outlining a new mission statement for our chapter that includes our vision and values. We haven’t finished yet, but here are a few snippets.
- SEEDS Grand Canyon Chapter is a group of diverse students inspiring young researchers, educating our communities and peers, and promoting ecology: a melting pot of sciences and people.
- We value a sense of community and place, social and academic support, and diversity in cultures, perspectives, and academic disciplines.
- In addition to a mission statement that more accurately reflects who we are as a chapter, we think we need to rename our chapter so people understand that we’re an ecology club. How does Grand Canyon SEEDS Ecology Club sound?
- We also talked about some concrete actions we could take to meet some of our chapter goals
- To make people more aware of ecology
- Mentoring programs
- Undergraduate research symposium with our students
- Funding opportunities/ideas
- Maintenance grant from national SEEDS
- PLT Greenworks
- Together Green fellowship
- Bake sale
- Ask local business to donate a portion of their profits on a certain day
- To advertise our chapter
- Help Matt Lau & IGERT host a speaker
